Twelve Red Roses, Hand-Tied

Twelve long-stem red roses, cut this morning and hand-tied the way we were taught — spiralled so every head sits at the same height, wrapped in kraft paper, finished with a jute tie. No cellophane, no glitter, no plastic sleeve. This is the arrangement people order when they want the gesture to be unmistakable and nothing else.

Trim two centimetres from each stem at a slant before the first water change. Keep the vase out of direct sun and away from the fruit bowl — ripening fruit gives off ethylene, which ages cut roses fast. Change the water every second day and these will hold for six to eight days in Lahore's summer.

  Still tight on arrival

  Ordered at 4pm, arrived 6:40 the same evening. The roses were still in tight bud and opened over three days. The kraft wrap looks far better in person than in the photograph.

  Ninth day and still standing

  I followed the card — recut the stems, stripped the lower leaves, changed the water every second day. Day nine and they are only now going over. I have never had cut roses last that long.

  Good, one head short

  Beautiful bouquet and it arrived on time in Clifton. One head was bruised on arrival. I sent a photo and they offered to redeliver, which I did not need — knocking a star off for the bruise, not the service.
